Introduction

We are thrilled to announce that the heart-warming initiative of “Pay What You Can” is making a comeback at The GALE Centre Community Café, starting from the 8th of January 2024. This scheme aims to keep the domino effect of kindness alive in our community, especially amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The Power of a Simple Cup Coffee

Drawing from an age-old concept, captured beautifully by Catherine Ryan Hyde’s “Pay It Forward” effect, we invite you to join us in this chain of kindness. Your act can be as simple as paying for a hot cup of coffee or a fresh salad plate. The beauty lies in the ripple effect it can create, touching lives and inspiring more acts of kindness in our community.

Last year, we saw an outpouring of generosity during our “Pay What You Can” initiative, which ran from January through March. With the help of a £1260 grant from the Highland Council Cost of Living Support Fund, we were able to provide a variety of food and drinks, either free or subsidised, to the community. Our café served 64 toasties, 37 soups, 23 baked potatoes, 3 salad plates, 157 hot drinks, 59 cold drinks, and 115 cakes, traybakes or scones.

Stretching Funds For Maximum Impact

Now, we’re not only bringing back the scheme in January but also hoping to run it through to 24th March. However, we do need more funds to make this possible. So, we’re reaching out to you to ‘Pay It Forward.’ Whether it’s cash donation while in the Centre or visiting our donation page, every contribution helps keep this chain of kindness intact.

How Does “Pay What You Can” Work?

The GALE Centre Community Café will continue to offer its regular menu of toasties, jacket potatoes, soups, salads, cakes, and hot drinks. The difference lies in the payment method – you pay what you can. If you’re struggling financially, you’re still welcome to enjoy the warmth, food, and company without any pressure to pay.

Janet Miles, our Managing Director, emphasises the importance of this initiative, stating, “At a time when so many are struggling, the importance of being able to socialise and spend quality time with friends should not be underestimated.”

The “Pay What You Can” scheme will operate daily, except Monday and Wednesday, when similar alternative options are available at the Community Hall and Gairloch Museum.

The GALE Centre Community Café is  ready to welcome you with open arms and warm hearts. We’re committed to making the funds stretch as far as possible, enabling this initiative to last as long as it can. Once the funds run out, we’ll revert to our normal prices, and this will be communicated via our Facebook page and within The GALE Centre.

Reviving Community Spirit, One Cup at a Time

Our community has shown us the power of paying it forward, and we’re excited to see this energy reignited for the new year. Remember, no matter how small the act, your kindness can trigger a cascade of goodwill that could go a long way in helping someone.

So, come join us from the 8th of January, enjoy your favourite dishes, and pay what you can. Let’s continue to support each other, fostering a sense of community and kindness amidst these challenging times. Together, we can make a difference.

Conclusion

The GALE Centre Community Café looks forward to welcoming you  to a warm space where everyone can enjoy a good meal, regardless of their ability to pay. Remember, the power to keep this kindness chain reaction going lies within us all. Let’s pay it forward, one cup of coffee at a time.
