World Toilet Day Fundraising Success at The GALE Centre
Celebrating Community Spirit

This past Sunday, 19th November, we marked World Toilet Day with a fundraising event at The GALE Centre. The day was a testament to the power of community spirit and a reminder of the importance of accessible public amenities. We’re incredibly grateful for all the contributions and are excited to share the day’s highlights with you.
Sweet Contributions: The Cake Donations
A heartwarming thank you goes out to everyone who contributed their time, skill, and ingredients to donate cakes for the event. Your delicious creations brought joy to the attendees and played a crucial role in our fundraising efforts. The funds raised from these cake sales will directly support the maintenance and management of the public toilets in Aultbea, Poolewe, and Kinlochewe.
Understanding the Importance: Public Loos
GALE has been care-taking and cleaning Poolewe and Aultbea public toilets since 1997, thanks largely to the commitment and support of a succession of fantastic cleaners who have carried out the role as a labour of love with a desire to retain the service for the local community.
Despite clean water and sanitation being a Sustainable Development Goal, the UK and Scottish Governments do not include toilet provision as one of their statutory provisions. As a result, public toilets are not well funded and local communities are left to pick up the tab – both financing the buildings and cleaning materials and volunteering time to keep them clean.
It’s important to remember that public loos are not a statutory provision. Yet, they play a crucial role in public health and comfort. The funds raised will ensure that we can keep these facilities open all year round, providing a much-needed service to our community and its visitors.
Generosity in Action: Community Council Donations
We are immensely grateful for the substantial donation of £1600 from the Loch Broom Community Council to the Aultbea Toilet Fund. This generous contribution will make a significant difference in maintaining the quality of our facilities. We also want to extend our sincere gratitude to the Aultbea Community Council, who worked tirelessly to broker this deal on GALE’s behalf.
Additionally, we appreciate the thoughtful donation of £50 from the Wester Loch Ewe Community Council to the Poolewe Toilet Fund. Every contribution, regardless of size, plays a part.
The Grand Total
Combined cake sales from the Community Cafe and Ian’s stall raised a total of more than £500. This will be split between Aultbea, Poolewe, and Kinlochewe, further supporting our local facilities. A donation will also be made to Toilet Twinning.
