In our ongoing series on Community Wealth Building (CWB), we now focus on the fourth pillar: Progressive Procurement of Goods and Services. This principle emphasises the importance of maximising community benefits through thoughtful procurement practices, fostering good enterprises, promoting fair work, and shortening supply chains.
The Need for Economic Re-localisation
As we continue to confront rising income inequality and economic insecurity, the idea of re-localising economic activity and ending financial extraction has gained significant traction. Many communities have recognised the urgent need to shift away from an economic system that often prioritises the interests of large corporations and a wealthy few over the needs of local communities and workers.
One effective way to maximise community benefits is by adopting a “local first” approach to procurement. By directing public and private spending towards local businesses and enterprises that prioritise fair work and community development, we can stimulate local economic growth, create jobs, and reduce inequality. This pillar highlights how strategic spending can become a powerful tool for empowering communities, ensuring that more money circulates within the local economy.
GALE’s Commitment to Local Procurement
GALE is leading the charge in driving local change by embracing a “local first” strategy in its supply chain. In 2023, GALE engaged 39 local producers and suppliers, contributing over £31,000 to their turnover. This commitment not only supports local businesses but also fosters sustainable economic development within the community.
Moreover, GALE has partnered with 27 community bakers in the same year, investing nearly £28,000 to keep the Community Café stocked with an array of delicious cakes. This collaboration empowers local bakers and also cultivates a sense of belonging within the community. By prioritising local partnerships, GALE strengthens local businesses, nurtures a vibrant food culture, and contributes to both economic growth and sustainability.

Through progressive procurement, GALE exemplifies how local enterprises can thrive by thinking local. By choosing to invest in local suppliers, we can ensure that our community benefits from quality products and services while simultaneously building stronger connections among residents.
