Introduction
We are thrilled to announce the opening of GALE Unwrapped, a zero waste shop located within the GALE Centre! This exciting addition to our community comes as a direct response to local feedback during the consultation process regarding our purchase of the Shieling. We had a lot of interest in establishing a zero waste shop—sometimes referred to as a refillery or scoop shop—and are starting to bring this vision to life. Thanks to the completion of the Shieling purchase in the spring and the recent appointment of our dedicated Shieling Project Development Manager, Iona, we are ready to open our doors on Monday 9th December!

At GALE Unwrapped, we aim to create a welcoming space where you can shop sustainably and make a positive impact on both your life and the planet. By choosing to shop zero waste, you’re not only reducing your environmental footprint, but you’re also supporting a healthier lifestyle. Say goodbye to excess packaging and hello to a more mindful way of consuming!
Pilot Project: Your Feedback Matters
Our shop will initially operate as a six-month pilot project from the GALE Centre, with background operations taking place at the Shieling. During this pilot phase we want as much feedback as possible to help us shape the service to meet local needs. If it proves the success we think it will be, then the plan would be to grow the range of products and relocate to larger premises within the Shieling. Equally if the service isn’t used over the next six months we will scale it back and move on to focus on a different pilot project instead. It’s very much a case of use it or lose it over the months ahead.
Exciting Product Offerings
To kick things off, we’re excited to offer a variety of products, including peanut butter, dried cranberries, glacé cherries, desiccated coconut, walnut halves, broken Brazil nuts, whole almonds, seed mix, jumbo oats, and red lentils. There’s plenty of choice, and we even have some ingredients that might remind you of festive treats—after all, it’s never too early to start planning for Christmas pudding! For inspiration on how to use these ingredients, be sure to follow the GALE Centre Facebook page, where we’ll be sharing delicious recipe ideas regularly.

Shopping at GALE Unwrapped is simple: bring your container, weigh it, fill it with as much or as little as you like, re-weigh it, and pay! This straightforward process ensures you get exactly the amount you want, eliminating waste and avoiding excess packaging.
