Unlocking Local Opportunities
HIE Business Panel Survey Insights
In a rapidly changing economic landscape, the potential for community-led projects to enhance local business prospects has emerged as a key theme. According to the recent HIE business panel survey, published in September 2025, over half of the businesses surveyed recognise the significant opportunities that community initiatives present. This sentiment is particularly relevant for local enterprises looking to thrive and connect with their communities.
The survey, conducted in June and July 2025, not only explored business confidence and growth aspirations but also assessed the implications of international trade amidst changing tariff measures. It highlighted an array of business strengths, development areas, and constraints, ultimately focusing on local opportunities that can be harnessed for mutual benefit.
Key Findings: Local Opportunities
The results reveal that 65% of businesses see opportunities from the influx of tourists and visitors to the area. Other promising avenues include renewable energy projects (53%), community-led developments (52%), and large construction or infrastructure projects (51%). These findings provide a clear indication that community engagement and collaboration can be a catalyst for growth and sustainability within our region. Among businesses who saw one or more of these activities as an opportunity, 71% felt at least somewhat ready to capitalise on them.
The GALE Centre: A Hub for Local Business
At the forefront of these opportunities in our area is the GALE Centre, which actively promotes businesses, local artists, craftspeople, and bakers. By stocking their products and showcasing their talents, the Centre attracts around 30,000 visitors annually, providing an invaluable shop window for local businesses.
Currently, we are seeking community bakers to supply our monthly bake stall at the Shieling. If you’re a local baker looking to share your creations with a wider audience, we would love to hear from you! This is just one example of how GALE is committed to fostering partnerships that benefit the entire community.
The Highland Energy Community Partnership
In addition to supporting local artisans, GALE is proud to be one of six local partners in the Highland Energy Community Project. With a growing emphasis on decarbonising domestic properties, there will be ample opportunities for local retrofitters. As the Highlands currently face a shortage of qualified retrofitters, this initiative not only aims to improve energy efficiency in homes but also presents a chance for tradespeople to gain the necessary qualifications.
If you are interested in learning more about our decarbonising your own home or if you’re a tradesperson seeking to enhance your skills, please reach out to our Energy Officer, Simon Spare.
