Introduction
Scotland continues to grapple with the debilitating effects of poverty, with recent statistics revealing an alarming 250,000 children amongst those affected. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the relentless cost of living crisis have exacerbated the poverty levels, making it increasingly difficult for people to earn adequate incomes to sustain a dignified life. Our social security system’s inadequacies and the structural issues in our labour market have become glaringly evident amidst these crises. Moreover, the climate emergency disproportionately affects those on low incomes, further perpetuating poverty trends. Now, it is more critical than ever to unite our voices in the fight against poverty.
Key Policy Asks
Challenge Poverty Week is an annual event that underscores key policy asks aimed at eradicating poverty. These policies strive to translate our shared values of justice and compassion into tangible actions and highlight the measures needed for our politicians to build a Scotland free from poverty. A Scotland Where We All Have Enough to Live a Decent and Dignified Life
What is The Poverty Alliance calling for?
Our call to action for today is for the Scottish Government to ensure that everyone has access to an adequate income by implementing the steps necessary to deliver a Minimum Income Guarantee.
How do we get there?
We propose the following actions for the Scottish Government to initiate the delivery of a Minimum Income Guarantee:
- Fast-track the review of disability assistance adequacy to address the additional costs incurred by disabled people, individuals with long-term conditions, and terminally ill patients.
- Expand the funded childcare entitlement and increase uptake of funded hours.
- Reassess the council tax reduction and water rates discount for households to alleviate more low-income families from these charges.
- Ensure that public sector debt recovery does not undermine the Minimum Income Guarantee.
Where does GALE Stand?
In Scotland, over 14% of all jobs pay less than the Real Living Wage, equating to approximately 330,000 jobs. Despite this alarming statistic, GALE remains committed to paying the Real Living Wage, guaranteeing a fair wage for a fair day’s work. The rise of in-work poverty and zero hour contracts coupled with the erosion of job security mean that the reality of employment for many is increasingly precarious. That is why GALE strives to create jobs which can provide all year round employment.
The GALE Centre stands as a testament to the incredible power of community-driven initiatives. It is through our successful trading activities, including our café and retail ventures, that we are able to fund all permanent job positions within our organisation. Every cup of coffee enjoyed, every locally crafted item purchased, and every interaction with our dedicated staff contributes to the sustainability of these positions.
GALE takes great pride in its commitment to the local community, and this is evident through our employment of 25 individuals in permanent positions.
