As part of its environmental remit, GALE was keen on reducing the amount of waste generated in our area, and this was evident in all of our past projects. GALE is pleased to have played such a large part in the Highland Real Nappy Project for 10 years, actively contributing to its success.
In response to a request from a local mother who was concerned about the number of disposable nappies filling her bin each week, GALE got actively involved in the Highland Real Nappy Project. The project aimed to reduce the volume of waste generated from disposable nappies, which accounted for 5% of our domestic waste, by encouraging parents to switch to reusable nappies.
During our involvement in the project, we provided parents with information on a wide range of reusable nappies, helped them identify suppliers of reusable nappies and related products, and offered them the opportunity to try a variety of reusable nappies through lending kits and starter packs. Additionally, we organised the annual Highland Baby Show in Inverness, which we attended for a span of 4 years, although it is no longer running. It brings us great joy to have been a part of these initiatives.
Thanks to the efforts of the project, we successfully diverted 400 tons of nappy waste from Highland landfill sites each year. It is truly gratifying to witness the positive impact we have made in reducing waste in our area.
The Highland Nappy Network, formerly known as The Highland Real Nappy Project, began in November 2001. GALE is thrilled to see the project go from strength to strength, expanding its area to cover the NHS Highland area, Moray, the Western Isles, Orkney, and Shetland.
