Introduction

12 -18 June 2023 is Loneliness Awareness Week. It is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about the negative impact of loneliness. It’s all about creating supportive communities by having conversations with family, friends or colleagues about loneliness.

Talking about loneliness can help people understand how to make connections in life, which can have a positive impact on their health and well-being.

The Impact of Loneliness

Loneliness can have a negative impact on your physical and mental health. It’s important to remember that we are social creatures, and our brains are wired for connection. When we don’t have meaningful relationships in our lives, it can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection – a state known as “social isolation.” The effects of this can be devastating: loneliness has been linked with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke; it may even shorten your lifespan by up to 20%.

Loneliness also has an effect on our brains: researchers have found that people who feel lonely experience increased activity in their amygdala (the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions), which leads them to interpret neutral faces as threatening or angry. This means that when you’re feeling lonely, even simple interactions like talking with strangers at coffee shops might seem intimidating because they trigger your fight-or-flight response – and this reaction only makes things worse!

How to Make Connections

  • Social media. You can find people on social media who share your interests and passions, as well as those who live in your area.
  • Joining groups and clubs. Many communities have groups that meet regularly to discuss topics of interest or do volunteer work together, such as helping out at a local shelter or soup kitchen once a week.
  • Volunteering. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people who are passionate about the same things you are! It also helps give back to your community while building up good karma points.
  • Attending events: If there’s anything happening in town that interests you – concerts, plays, festivals – go ahead and go! You never know who might be there too!

The Benefits of Connecting

Connecting with other people is one of the most important things you can do in life. It not only improves your mental and physical health, but also increases happiness and life satisfaction.

Connecting with others also improves problem-solving skills as well as your ability to deal with stress. It helps you build a strong support network that keeps you grounded when times are tough, which leads to better overall wellbeing for everyone involved!

Overcoming the Challenges of Connecting

While it’s important to connect with others, it can be difficult for people with limited resources. They may find it hard to make connections because they don’t have the money or time needed to meet new people or go out with friends. If you’re unemployed or struggling financially, this can make finding friendship even more challenging than usual.

Initially funded by a grant of £1260 from the Highland Council Cost of Living Support Fund, The GALE Community Cafe offered everyone the chance to “Pay What You Can” for food and drink throughout the last winter. It gave everyone the chance to socialise no matter their financial position.

The Community Cafe provided 99 toasties, 47 soups,  28 baked potatoes, 3 salad plates, 168 hot drinks, 59 cold drinks and 120 cakes, traybakes or scones either free or subsided. But some generous souls paid more than our normal menu prices. They paid it forward!

Thanks to the power of kindness we have funds to bring the scheme back this coming winter. But we will need more funds to be able to run all the way through winter

The Power of Kindness

The power of kindness is something that’s often overlooked, but it can be a major factor in how you’re perceived by others. The more you show kindness to others, the more likely they are to reciprocate with their own acts of generosity.

The positive effects of random acts of kindness are well-documented: they improve health and wellbeing, reduce stress and anxiety levels, boost self-esteem and even increase life expectancy! If you want your relationships with others (including your partner) to flourish over time then this is one area where it pays off big time if you put some effort into making it happen.

Acts of kindness build exponentially in a community because people believe that one good deed deserves another.  So we are asking you to ‘Pay It Forward’ to help our community. As the cost of living crisis continues, let’s ensure that no one has to endure loneliness because of lack of funds.

If you’d like to “Pay It Forward”, visit our donation page or when you are next in The GALE Centre, just let your server know that you would like to donate. Let’s keep the kindness chain reaction going.
