Introduction

It’s Listen Well Week 22 – 26 May, and we want to celebrate by reminding you that listening well is a great way to improve your relationships, your health, and even the world around you!

Act of Love

Listening well is an act of love.

It’s easy to think that listening is simply an act of hearing, but it’s so much more than that. Listening well means not just hearing what someone says, but understanding their feelings and thoughts as well. When you listen with compassion and empathy, you open yourself up to learning something new about another person–and this can lead to building stronger relationships with them!

Listening also shows respect for the person speaking: when someone feels heard by us in a conversation (or even on the phone), they’ll feel valued as an individual human being and that goes a long way in creating strong bonds between people who might otherwise never meet each other.

Connect with Others

Listening well is a chance to connect with others. It’s an opportunity to show them that you care about what they have to say, and it allows you to connect on an emotional level. Listening well helps us understand others better, which in turn builds trust between people.

Listening well is a way to make someone feel heard. We do this when we give others a chance to speak, and when we show interest in what they have to say. Listening well also helps us understand another person’s perspective better and that can be a huge benefit in building relationships with them.

Listen Well Week Connect with Others

Strengthen Relationships and Improve Self-esteem

Listening well strengthens our relationships and improves our self-esteem. It helps us understand others better, feel better about ourselves, build trust with others, find common ground and connect with them in meaningful ways.

When we listen well:

  • We show that we value the person speaking to us by giving them our attention and focus (or “active listening”). This makes them feel important and respected by you. When someone feels valued by another person it builds trust between them which creates an environment where they can open up more easily than they would otherwise be able to do if they didn’t trust each other at all!
  • When we listen well, we build trust that makes it easier for people to open up more easily than they would otherwise be able to do if they didn’t trust each other at all!

Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Listening is a powerful tool. It can help you understand yourself and others better, reduce stress and anxiety, connect with others, and even improve your relationships.

  • Listening helps you understand yourself better: When we listen deeply to ourselves or another person’s experience (without judgment), we learn about our own thoughts, feelings and needs on an emotional level. This leads to greater self-understanding and awareness of what matters most in life – which makes it easier for us to make decisions that align with our values.
  • Listening helps you understand others better: When someone else is talking about their experiences or perspective on something important in their lives (for example their career path), listening allows us to see things from the other person’s point of view so we can be more compassionate towards them.

Vive la Difference!

Listening well is an important skill that helps us connect with others, even those who are different from us. It’s also one of the best ways we can learn new things and understand ourselves better.

It’s easy to get distracted when someone else is talking – we might think about what we want to say next instead of listening carefully, or maybe our mind wanders off into thoughts about what happened earlier in the day or tomorrow morning’s meeting. But if you want to be a good listener, try these tips:

  • Make eye contact with the person speaking (but not too much!). This shows them that you’re interested in what they have to say and makes them feel comfortable talking with you. If it helps, look away from time-to-time but then immediately look back at them again!
  • Don’t interrupt when someone else is talking; wait until they finish their sentence before responding yourself. Don’t talk over other people when there are multiple conversations happening at once.

The Benefits of Listening are Endless

Listening well is a way to express love. It helps us connect with others and build relationships, it helps us learn new things, it helps us understand ourselves better, and it can even improve our relationships!

When we listen well:

  • We show that we care about the person speaking by giving them our attention.
  • We demonstrate respect for their thoughts and feelings by listening attentively without judgment or interruption.  In this way, listening well is an act of love because it affirms another person’s worthiness in the world – their value as an individual who deserves recognition and respect just like anyone else does (or even more so).

Conclusion

We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about the benefits of listening well and why it’s so important. We know that there are many ways to listen, but we encourage you to remember that the best one is just being there for someone else and letting them know they’re heard!

What is Counselling & How Can It Help?

Counselling falls under the umbrella term ‘talking therapies’ and allows people to discuss their problems and any difficult feelings they encounter in a safe, confidential environment.

The term can mean different things to different people, but in general, it is a process people seek when they want to change something in their lives, or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.

Counselling can help you to:

  • Feel better about yourself if you’re struggling with difficult emotions such as low self-esteem, anger or negative thoughts.

  • Help you with your mental health, such as stress, anxiety and depression.

  • Improve and help with relationship issues or a relationship breakdown.

  • Cope better with a difficult change or event in your life such as a bereavement or going through the menopause.

  • Help you to make important life changes such as addiction recovery, abstinence and eating disorders.

  • Help you to understand any identity issues.

  • Help you recover from past trauma, abuse and PTSD

It offers support to people at home, who have been identified as needing help, either by the local NHS teams or friends and family.

The volunteer provides social and practical support in an informal way. The amount of time and activities will vary but every volunteer will provide a friendly ear to listen as well as extra assistance to help reduce anxiety and stress for individuals and carers.
