Building Community Cohesion Through Nature and Storytelling
Introduction
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, it brought with it a host of challenges that many of us never imagined we would have to face. One of the most significant impacts was the sense of isolation and disconnection that many people felt as a result of restrictions on social gatherings and the need for social distancing. The Aultbea community in the Scottish Highlands was no exception to this, and members of the Aultbea Community Council and Aultbea Area Together group recognised the need for social reconnection and community cohesion in the aftermath of the pandemic.
A Community-Led Project
Thus, Aultbea Stories was born, a community-led project funded by the British Science Association and Wellcome – the Ideas fund. The project aimed to develop relationships between researchers and communities, enhance the wellbeing of individuals and the community as a whole, and bring people together through opportunities to connect with nature and the local landscape.
The project kicked off in 2022, with events and story gathering taking place over several months. Many members of the community attended or contributed their stories, helping to co-create an understanding of how our community connects with and values nature both now and in the past. The project sought to promote a deeper appreciation for the natural world and to encourage people to learn from each other’s experiences.
The Audio-Visual Trail
One of the ways that Aultbea Stories has sought to share its findings within the community is through an Audio Visual trail. This trail provides an opportunity for people to visit special places in the community and connect with other people’s experiences and reflections on nature and the landscape. The trail is a perfect way to explore the environment and the stories that have helped shape the community’s relationship with nature.
