Introduction

At GALE, we are dedicated to fostering social innovation and community empowerment. As a social enterprise that has been operational since 1997, we are excited to share the latest developments in Scotland’s commitment to Community Wealth Building (CWB).

Key Findings from the Independent Report

This month, the Scottish Government unveiled an independent report highlighting strategies to enhance the role of inclusive and democratic enterprises throughout the nation. Led by Neil McInroy, the Global Lead for Community Wealth Building at The Democracy Collaborative, the report provides actionable recommendations aimed at fulfilling Scotland’s National Strategy for Economic Transformation. This strategy seeks to significantly increase the number of social enterprises, employee-owned businesses, and co-operatives in Scotland.

Local Initiatives and Support Networks

The report’s findings are timely, considering the growing momentum behind CWB practices being implemented across various communities in Scotland. Local initiatives are already making strides, and the formation of a supportive network is on the horizon to further advance this vital work. This collaboration will enhance the impact of CWB actions on the ground and create a robust framework for continued progress.

Legislative Commitments for 2024

In conjunction with the report, the Scottish Government also released its 2024 Programme for Government, outlining legislative commitments for the upcoming year. Notably, the government pledged to enact legislation that will ensure the consistent implementation of the CWB model across Scotland. This commitment signals a strong intention to embed the principles of community wealth into the fabric of Scotland’s economy

Conclusion

As we move forward, we at GALE are eager to engage with these developments and support the growth of social enterprises that prioritise inclusivity and sustainability. Together, we can build a more equitable economic landscape in Scotland, empowering communities and fostering shared prosperity. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to champion the principles of Community Wealth Building!
