As part of the recent Community Action Plan, the need to employ and develop opportunities for local jobs for local people emerged as a high priority. The creation and enhancement of employment opportunities are key to community growth, and it’s an objective we’re passionate about at GALE.

More and more, the concept of the ‘wellbeing economy‘ is being discussed. But what is it, and why is it so crucial for Scotland?
The wellbeing economy is a model that measures a country’s success not only by its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but also by its social and environmental outcomes. These include health, happiness, equality, and sustainability. This approach aims to foster a more equitable and inclusive society that prioritises people and the planet over profit. In the face of the current climate and nature challenges, the wellbeing economy offers an ideal approach.
The Role of Social Enterprises in the Wellbeing Economy
Social enterprises, like GALE, are key players in the wellbeing economy. These are businesses with a social or environmental mission at their heart. Unlike traditional businesses, social enterprises reinvest their profits back into the community or their causes, rather than distributing them to shareholders or owners. They prioritise purpose over profit and are accountable to their stakeholders, not just their investors.
GALE’s Impact and Performance
So as a social enterprise, how has GALE contributed over the last twelve months? Turning over around £400K per annum, GALE kept £350K circulating in the local economy via a local first approach. By employing locals and sourcing services from local businesses and producers, GALE ensures that as much as possible of the wealth generated by our activities stays within our community. Over the coming months, we aim to dissect the significant figure of £350K. However, for today, let’s focus on the broader impact.
GALE’s contribution to the local economy and community wellbeing includes employing 33 locals, engaging over 39 local businesses and producers, utilising the services of 27 community bakers, and partnering with 6 charities or community groups. All these actions ensure the wealth and opportunities created by GALE are retained within the local community.
