GALE is a community owned and managed Development Trust – owned collectively by over 200 residents of the Gairloch and Loch Ewe areas.  Their aim is to regenerate the Gairloch and Loch Ewe area in a sustainable way by promoting social inclusion, strengthening our fragile economy and enhancing our local environment, all with the goal of making the area a better place for people of all abilities to live, work and thrive.

The GALE Centre is a community owned social and economic hub, creating opportunities for volunteering, employment, health and wellbeing.  It provides services for tourists, promoting beneficial tourism by generating an income for local people from tourism and ensuring the benefits of tourism are spread widely across the whole community.  The Centre employs 20 local people all year round, promotes 70 local tourism businesses including those that are off the beaten track and away from the main NC500 route. It supports 50 local art and craft producers by selling their products and 20 local bakers supply the community café with their home bakes.

In all 125 local people (5% of the population of communities in the Gairloch and Loch Ewe area) benefit financially each year from The GALE Centre – that’s community wealth building in action!

GALE would love to do more, create more volunteering and training opportunities, more supported employment for people with disabilities and more year round jobs for local young people so they can continue to live in the area they grew up in.  Every penny spent in The GALE Centre or donated to GALE goes directly towards achieving this aim.  What better reason to shop local and eat cake!
